Joyeux anniversaire Ms. Patches!
The not-entirely-comprehensible knowledge that our current state of things is the result of an arguably infinite chain of seemingly meaningless events is one of those things that we just aren't really capable of dwelling on for too long. Add to that the knowledge that we as individuals each have the power to alter all future events and the heartbreaking fact that no matter what we do, the universe will eventually expand so large that galaxies become infinitesimal and unnoticeable or the universe will collapse and you can give yourself a real stomachache. Or invent God.
Heck, something you did just two days ago can have you end up somewhere you never thought you'd be. What if Gavrilo Princip missed? What if black people in Florida had been allowed to vote in 2000? What if the gases that would eventually bond to form the Sun didn't bond?
I was trying to look up an old Bloom County comic that dealt with this issue, so let me know if you find it.
